I hired Spyder/**** ***** in Nov 2021 to renovate my basement. He quoted $80,000, but didn't put it in writing. The work started the last week in Mar 2022 and I was told would be finished by August 2022. The work required excavation and a new slab to be poured to start. At this time, **** said that the price had gone up, but gave the impression that the total would be $100,000. Prior to this work being done, I was provided drawings that were to be submitted with the HRM permit (for which I paid - photography, drawings, and permit application fee). On May 24, 2022, I met with **** to discuss the quote where this was now up to $130,000 because there needed to be extra drilling in the basement due to rock. On May 27th, i confirmed an option to dig down a portion of this. This work proceeded to Sept 2022 and it was on November 8 that I received an invoice for the digging that was an additional $21,000. I met with **** on Nov 11, 2022 and he admitted that he was not clear that there was extra work and did not include this in the quote he supplied me; and that the invoice was incorrect as I was billed for work that wasn't done. I did pay this but made it clear I would have not proceeded had I known about this extra cost. I have this meeting fully documented. From this meeting, I was given the impression that the work would proceed quickly now, however it is still not complete; from a documented meeting in Jan 2023, he said it would be finished in Mar 2023. On Feb 27 2023 I received a $50,000 bill and when I asked for details on this, **** texted to tell me it was "too much work." He then said he was stopping work but booked a pre-drywall inspection on Mar 2; this failed because **** hasn't finished the work. He also provided me with an invoice for the HVAC, however this too was incorrect and he charged me $3000 over. I'm not confident the billing is accurate or the project will not pass inspection. I may not be able to apply for provincial rebates due to delays.
