I hired Universal Hardwood (********************* [owner]) to install hardwood floors on my house, which I had just purchased. On 11/18/21, I signed the project proposal and paid the first installment ($7,574). At that time, the total job cost was $22,722, and ***** asked to be paid in 3 installments (the first before the work began, the second upon the installation of hardwoods, and the third after the completion of the job.) ***** was to complete the work before I move into the house (by 12/24/21). On 12/7/21, ***** sent me a revised project proposal because we decided not to install hardwood on the front foyer area (where ***** originally told me was covered in linoleum was actually in tiles). ***** then added new charges on the revised proposal. We eventually agreed on the final project cost, and I paid him the second installment ($7,574) on 12/11/21, with the agreement that the final installment ($4,284) be paid after the job was completed. On 12/17/21, ***** let me know the job was completed, but I found several issues when I went to the house on 12/19/21 to confirm. I talked to ***** on 12/20/21, and he agreed to work on some of the issues (e.g., installing door pulls on the crawl space openings). [After he installed these pulls, he then added $120 as separate charge.] When we spoke on 12/20/21, ***** in passing mentioned that I might find the upstairs bathroom door a bit tight because of the new hardwood installation, but he never said this door no longer closes anymore. After I moved in later that week, I found that this door does not close at all. ***** now says that since he did not take that door off to do his work, it's not his job to make that door close as it used to. And, to have this door work again, he now wants to charge another $175. I think it is a part of a contractor's job to have the things in their original working condition when he completes his work (without keep adding new charges).
