I signed up for a 6-month $.99/month trial subscription. After the 6th month, I would pay $14.99. A few days before my subscription was to end, I tried to cancel the subscription but there was no button to do so. I checked multiple times but there was no "cancel subscription" link and their website strangely said I was not subscribed to any service (when they said I was). In any case, I thought everything was fine until about 2 months later (last week) when I saw I was charged for the last 2 months. I called in to try and get a refund but they were unprofessional, disrespectful, and kept hanging up on me after I started arguing with them about a service which I tried to cancel. They also said because the credit card had already processed they couldn't give out a refund. What the heck? Other companies do that all the time.I WILL NEVER USE the sfchronicle.com website again, and neither should you. They seem to scam people for their credit card info and charge you whether you want them to or not.Review from David M

Signed up for a 3 month trial subscription and then tried to cancel. Was first told that my subscription had not been activated in the billing system so it could not be canceled and that I would have to call back (is this a rentention tactic? ). I called back a week later and was informed that even though my subscription would end Oct 2nd, I would be billed for the next month because "automatic billing occurs 10 days prior". How can they charge people for a service without actually rendering the service? Isn't that just theft?San Francisco Chronicle Response

Hello *****,
Thank you for your feedback on the San Francisco Chronicle. I am sorry to see that you were provided with some incorrect information by our service agent. You would not have been billed until your expiration date of Oct 2nd, but since you've requested a stop to your subscription, you will no longer be billed any further and your subscription will end after the promotional period. Thank you for reading the San Francisco Chronicle.
Regards.

Hello **********************,
Thank you for your feedback regarding your San Francisco Chronicle subscription. I apologize for the poor customer service experience you encountered and I would be happy to assist you.
Please provide me with the delivery address and phone number on the account so I can look into what occurred with the delivery and follow up with the local distributor to correct this issue. I am also happy to credit the account to ensure that you receive the full period you paid for. If you have any other questions, please feel free to let me know and I would be happy to help.

***** In November 23 I thought I was taking advantage of a 40% off Sunday only delivery with the SF Chronicle! They charge my account twice a day apart, then 13 days later they charged $72, extending my delivery to June 8th!! I called & spoke to an irate person name *******, refusing to refund my money, finally she transferred me to her supervisor, who again refused to reimburse my unauthorized charges. Finally, I threatened to go to my bank **** agreed to reimburse $72. Furthermore, out of the 4 weeks Ive only received 1 paper delivery!!! Do not subscribe to the SF Chronicle, they are barely surviving due to people now getting news over the web. They are desperate & cheating people.Review from jeff o

don't ever subscribe to their e-edition they make it impossible to cancel. Online when you try they tell you to call and when you call they are either thieves or stupid for four months I have tried.Review from John H

My neighbor regularly receivies their newspaper. However, the chronicle was unable to deliver the newspaper to our next door address. After six complaints nothing was done. You keep getting the run around that the issue will be escalated to the manager. Had to cancel subscription. Incompetence!Review from Michele C

I have repeatedly tried to cancel my subscription to this newspaper and I keep getting charged, even though I have canceled the first online, then called them and canceled, then sent an email to cancel. I know I could always cancel my card but because other subscriptions I do want are tied to that card, it's a hassle--yet it looks like I may be forced to do this. This newspaper should stop charging me fraudulently and should respect when people cancel a subscription. Because technically I am no longer a subsciber, I cannot log in and re-cancel. I have no account, but they continue to keep charging me $19.95 per month. This is bad customer service and I strongly hope others do not subscribe until they tighten up their customer services practices.Review from Linda M

Ive emailed them and they dont answer. It seems impossible to unsubscribe from my digital trial subscription. I called my bank to put a stop if they try to charge me. I even sent a copy of my email to the **** Dont ever subscribe digitally or you can never unsubscribe. They dont have a dedicated phone number for digital subscriptions. We called to cancel our SF Chronicle subscription of over 20 years. We were transferred twice, offered three lower rates, then told we could not receive a refund for the remainder of our subscription. We quoted to the supervisor the terms allowing a refund for the unused portion, directly from our emailed receipt from the *********************** The supervisor first defended the employee, stating that the employee was doing as instructed as a member of the ********************* The supervisor then acknowledged that the employee's instructions came from him as supervisor. The supervisor then stated that he would cancel the subscription as a special accommodation to us, then acknowledged that the terms of the service allowed the refund. The supervisor then alleged that he had no supervisor, and that yes, he does work for the Chronicle. Finally the supervisor said that he was processing the cancellation. We then had to ask for a receipt by email, to which he replied that we would not receive a receipt, but that it would show up on our bank statement in **** days. Those are the facts as I recall them occurring within the past hour. Reviewing other customer reviews on ******************** and on Yelp, I am surprised at how long these practices have been allowed to contnue unchallenged, and disappointed that BBB does not provide any further avenue of complaint than this text box.Review from Kalypso G

SF "Comical" started charging me monthly for a subscription I was not aware of and notified them immediately to discontinue or cancel it, but they claimed they did not find a subscription for me for months! I once dis the 99 cent trial, and since it ended, I could not log into the account. ***** state law states they need to accept a cancellation at ANY time when requested. I will NEVER touch that paper again!
