My tenant, ****** ******* residing at XXXXX ******** **** ******* *** XXXXX, signed over her covid-19 rent relief check ********* to me in the first week of 07/2022, and shortly thereafter, found herself in jail. My bank would not honor the check without her present, On August 18th, 2022, business owner, ******* at said check cashing market agreed to cash the check when I offered him ***** and I was truthful in telling him the difficulty of cashing the check anywhere else and my daughter needing financial help for a health issue, so I needed his help to help her. The days that followed, he continued to say it hadn't cleared or made excuses as to why it was taking so long, due to being a three-party check or he was out of town dealing with a fire in Big Bear. Naturally, sometime later he stopped answering calls & texts. The funds were never paid out to me; the few times I have confronted him at his market, he continues to lie and never produced a copy of the ck with bank letter stating why the check was not honored, as I requested. Recently, Covid-19 Rent Relief/ Housing is Key, XXX-XXX-XXXX, confirmed the check was cashed and paid out on 8/19/2022, but are unable to tell me to who. A course, being the landlord, I know who I gave the check to and who has scammed me. Approx. a week after handing the ck to ******* he had asked me if I needed some money while we were waiting for the ck to clear, appearing to give a friendly gesture of being kind and thoughtful, as if he would be paying out of his own pocket for the time being. I replied " no", stating I would wait til the ck cleared, when all along he had the money and had I answered "yes", he would very well have given me something. Our conversations in the very beginning, when I questioned ****** about what's happening with the check, he would continue to ******** remind me that he would never ruin the good standing reputation he has had for the last 40 yrs. in our community. Surprise!
