1.***** ***** does scheduling and admin. **** is her husband who does the labor side. **** quoted $1.4K to complete stain of my 39’8’ foot deck. Quoted 600sq ft to ensure I paid For time/product of railings & sides. His wife scheduled him to come for his His first visit April 1. **** showed at 1040,later than discussed. I paid full $1.4K in cash that day. **** took a lunch. He left about 5/530p that day. Said he’d come back that weekend to finish. 2. Was unable to come to finish till April 8 due to car trouble. I left town this day. **** text me at 1140 w/ a picture of him driving on the highway to my house. Later than we discussed, but ok. He came from Tallahassee to do job. I asked before he started if it was ok. He said the job was big enough so yes. I don’t know what time he arrived. He text he was getting lunch @ about 345p. I am still out of town. I don’t know when he left. Next day, ****** wife text & said **** would need more stain. I never heard from ***** at this point. She asked to be paid in advance so they didn’t have to purchase more product out of picket. ***** said $216 for stain which is the price online and asked for $67 in gas money. I paid $300 to be kind via Venmo. After reflection, **** told me he gets 20% off product through Home Depot because of the pro referral. So the product only cost him $174. 3. **** came out w/the new product on April 15. At 1100 he text me a picture of him driving on the highway on his way. I do not know what time he actually arrived. I was at work. When I got home about 430p, he was in back working. I attempted to say hello, but he had headphones in and didn’t hear me. **** left about 645p. I know since I was at a neighbors house on their front porch, I waved, I don’t think he saw me. About 10min later, his wife text saying **** said he needed 1 more gallon of stain & he underbid the job. wanted $400 more dollars to finish. He used more stain than needed. I finished it & it looks like it should on work I did.

      To whom it may concern:

I, ***** *****, am writing in response to the complaint received, ID ********. We are sorry that the customer is upset with the work that was done at her home. We feel that we did everything within our means to complete the job. The mistake we made was not physically doing an estimate from the beginning. That is why they are called estimates. So when the job became more than what was proposed, we asked for an adjustment. **** stayed in constant contact with the customer to keep her abreast of everything involved. The drive from Tallahassee to her home was almost 2hrs one way. This was made known to her in advance. There is also a time zone change. The amount of stain necessary was also estimated. **** also did extra things like sanding the deck hand rails that the builder had failed to do. He also had asked the owner to keep her dogs off the deck but that did not happen, He had to work around dog feces that the owner doesn't mention either. **** did everything to the best of his abilities and we do not feel that a refund is warranted since he offered to complete the job.

      Customer response

***** never came out here.  I spoke with **** before he ever came out to my home.  I asked specifically if he did not want to travel this far.  He stated the job was big enough.  If he wanted to wait to estimate after seeing it, he should have done so.  Instead, ***** waited till after the second time he came out to work to ask for $216 for more stain (5 gallon bucket) for the porch and $67 for gas.   To be kind, I sent her $300.  After further thought, I have now realized **** receives 20% of the stain because of his pro-referral discount through home depot.  The stain was therefore only $172.80 and not $216.

Also, maybe the first quote of $1.4K was off.  If that was the case, I should have been told that when he came out the first time.  **** had no issue taking full payment in cash before he even began working.

The only reason **** needed more stain is because he was using way too much.  I know this, because I ended up finishing the deck myself.  The work he did, the stain looks like a full coverage stain.  The work I did, the stain looks semi-translucent like the product says it is.  As far as the sanding of the deck… I did not see him do that nor did I ask him to do that.

As for my dogs, I did keep my dogs off the deck for 48hrs after each time he came out… which is what he asked.  As for working around dog poop… that is a lie.  ***** would not know because she never came out to my house.  There is a very small area of dirt at the end of my deck where the dogs would use the restroom before I had my fence installed.  That area is 8ft by 6ft.  The deck is 39ft x 8ft, so the amount of time he should have spent down there was minimal.  Regardless, the dog poop was always picked up.

Of course they do not think they should refund my money because they offered to finish it… ***** kindly left out she asked for $400 more to finish the job while she only stated **** needed one gallon more of stain to finish.  Odd considering it was less than that for the extra 5 gallon they first asked for… but seriously, one 5 gallon bucket for the whole job should have been plenty, but **** used was too much product.

I hope it is ok that I am responding to *****’s response as the system would not let me type.

Please let me know if I should do anything else.

Thanks so much for your help.
