Homeworks *** replaced the deck connected to our house in July 2022/ this year. However, the railings of the deck were crooked and joints were not tightly fastened to other joints/ areas of the deck. At these gaps, water can get in easily and create rot of the wood and quicker deterioration of the deck. Plus, Crooked railings do not look very good especially since it's a new deck. I simply want the company to come out and do the repairs on the new deck they installed as they promised. I spoke to them on several occasions and they have promised they would come out and fix the deck but simply have not and it has been 4 months. They also have not responded to my last three attempts to contact them. Thank you so much for pushing them to do what is right. *******Business response

The client on this project was given multiple options for the railings for which this complaint was filed. She elected to utilize a Brazilian hardwood on the deck surfacing however, refused this option on the railing as it was more costly than pressure-treated pine. The salesperson and the contract both identified that while most decks are installed with a pressure-treated pine railing system it is not the most preferred material to utilize as the railing. Her contract identified that this material has a tendency to warp, twist, shrink, crack, check, and change in color, and that the product required treatment. The client chose this material as it was the least expensive option for that particular portion of the deck. Upon the completion of the project, a final walk-through was performed with the client and the railings were found to be installed properly with tight craftsman joints, and the top railing was routed and sanded as is with all of our deck installations. It only takes a month or two during the summer for pressure-treated pine to lose its moisture content, and begin shrinking, twisting and cracking. After receiving an initial complaint in August of 2022 from the client regarding the shrinking, twisting, and cracking (The natural tendency of the material) of the railings, we promptly returned to the site. While it is impossible to prevent this material from shrinking, twisting and cracking, adjustments were made that were once again at the time found satisfactory to the client. It was reiterated that a treatment plan should be entered into with a company to maintain her deck as pressure-treated pine, while structurally safe is not aesthetically appealing without maintenance.
