On February 16th, 2021 my husband and I filed our 2020 taxes with Lewis Accounting, specifically ***** ********. We signed off on all of the correct documents and verified our bank account and routing information was correct before signing. We never received our 2020 tax refund of $9511 or our third stimulus check of $5600. We spoke with ***** who stated that she made a mistake on our report and input someone else’s bank account and routing information, causing both our tax refund and stimulus check to be deposited into someone else’s bank account on 3/3/21 and 3/17/21. I have spent countless hours on the phone trying to resolve this issue with the business, the IRS, and the bank our money was wrongly sent to. No one will help us. ***** stated she was communicating with the IRS on our behalf, and stated that she would be able to get us our refund and stimulus check returned to us, but she has not done so. She has not even offered to refund us the initial $150 we paid her to correctly file our 2020 taxes. She has refused to communicate with us, offer a solution, or fix her error. Her mistake or possible intentional change has cost us $15,111 and countless hours of time and stress.Customer response

Complaint: ********
I am rejecting this response because:
We have been discussing a resolution via email and have not been able to come to an agreement yet. I emailed ***** a few days ago and haven't received a response. We also have an appointment with our attorney 3/16 to discuss the negotiations with him and discuss our options going forward. This is our proposal to *****, the business owner:
We do not agree with the $4,000 initial payment and $500 monthly payments afterwards, as this would take 22 months for us to receive our full payment. We do not feel that we can trust that we would even receive every monthly payment for 22 months. Instead we are requesting the full refund of $9511 to be paid to us initially, and the remaining $5600 stimulus check to be paid monthly and to be paid in full by one year. If we ever get refunded by the IRS, we are not agreeing to return any payments to *****, the business owner. We are happy to drop the BBB case, delete the negative Google review, and to not pursue any further legal/negative action once we come to an agreement.
Regards,
******** *********

Dear BBB of Northeast Florida & Southeast Atlantic,
I wanted to take a minute and update you on the complaint submitted against my business in February 2022.
I met with the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, and I am working with them to try and resolve the case. With their expertise we may have figured out what really happened.
As it turns out, it looks like ********'s email she used to contact me has been compromised and we have both been misled and their refund was stolen. It's very early in the investigation but I hope the Internal Revenue Service will be reissuing their refunds because of the identity theft.
At this time, I am no longer willing to negotiate any payment agreements with the ********** in light of this new information but will continue to work with the FBI and IRS to help them get their refunds.
Please update your records and let me know what will happen to this complaint moving forward. I have worked very hard to have a good reputation and do not feel that it should be damaged because of this identity theft.
