Hello, I and my husband ********************* have worked with Smith Accounting in ********* for more than a decade. They did good work for us so far. They had set up an estimated tax payment plan, so that we would not owe taxes upon filing the return. This year, I submitted my materials as always, in March. I asked if that was enough time, or if I needed an extension. I was assured it would not be necessary. When I was traveling out of town for April 13 and 14, and I had not heard back about my return (usually, there are questions that need another day or so), I asked for an extension. I was given no timeline. In the following months, I asked repeatedly whether my return was worked on, but it was not until July that I finally got some questions and it was submitted on July 10. My husband had done unusual stock activities, so our income in 2021 was unusually high, and we ended up owing taxes in the range of $28000. Paid electronically in full with the return. I had expected that extra payment and had it ready in my account since March. In August I got notice from the *** that I owed interest in the range of $800 for the time between April 15 and July 17. What I did not know and what Smith accounting had not told me about. I had not been given any information about such interest , or I would have insisted that my return was filed before April 15. There was no reason Smith Accounting took so long to get to my return when I was initially assured it would be done before the due date. My husband asked nicely if there was not any form Smith Accounting could file, something like it was due to their slowness, not our submitting materials late, but apparently nothing happened. On Oct. 6, ****** Smith emailed me to just pay the interest. We paid more than $900 for tax preparation with Smith Accounting. I think for that amount, I can expect an on-time submission, or at least close to April 15 or asking me if there was any unusual income and a warning about interest accruing.Than
