The Snake River Animal Shelter (SRAS) is a non-profit animal sheltering facility serving all of East Idaho, located on the banks of the Snake River in Idaho Falls, ID. The community needed a non-profit shelter that would offer education opportunities on the humane treatment of animals, as well as implement innovative programs to alleviate the problem of too many unwanted domestic animals. All of the animals that come to SRAS are given an unlimited length of stay, but their primary goal is to find every critter in their care a forever home as soon as possible. The Snake River Animal Shelter’s vision is to be the leader in the region through operational best practices and impactful programs to increase the number of animal lives saved. Snake River Animal Shelter improves the well-being of animals and people by bettering the quality of life in the community.Snake River Animal Shelter offers a variety of programs and services:Owner Surrenders: The Snake River Animal Shelter is a non-profit shelter and will gladly accept owner surrendered animals, provided space is available and the animal passes our evaluations for an adoptable pet.Adoptions: All the animals who are available for adoption have been spayed or neutered and received all necessary vaccines as well as medical care, if needed. Snake River Animal Shelter offers a variety of discounts for adoptions, such as a Veteran's discounts, discounts on senior dogs and cats, and regular cat specials.K-9 Training and Service Dog Training: The Idaho K-9 Academy is a dog training program that is part of Snake River Animal Shelter's mission to keep dogs out of the shelter and in their homes. The program aims to help families and their pets have a better understanding of one another! It offers obedience training (basic to advanced) as well as behavior modification. The Idaho K-9 Academy can also provide dogs and their handlers with service dog training, police dog training, and search and rescue training.Food Program: Through partnerships with various grocery stores that donate damaged pet food bags, Snake River Animal Shelter has enough pet food to feed our own animals, as well as to give away food to households in need. Before the Snake River Animal Shelter food program, locals who could no longer afford to feed their pets would often feel no choice but to surrender their animals to a shelter. Now, anyone can come by the shelter and take needed food items for their pets. This offer is widely accepted and often makes a difference in a person’s ability to keep their pet.Spay and Neuter Initiatives in the Region: In cooperation with the All About the Animals Coalition, Snake River Animal Shelter works toward increased access to low-cost or free spay and neuter options in less served communities. Currently, the coalition is working towards offering monthly spay and neuter clinics at the Fort Hall Reservation.Additionally, Snake River Animal Shelter has a volunteer program that has been impacted heavily by the COVID-19 pandemic but which will be slowly restarted if the current situation allows it.
