Initial Complaint

- Complaint Type:
- Service or Repair Issues
- Status:
- Unanswered
General Contractor (may be unlicensed--I am not sure) ******************************* abandoned the bathroom renovation job that I hired him to do after serious and egregious mistakes in floor tiling (with potential to injure someone) were asked to be rectified using a qualified tile expert. Initial quote was for $5920 and he added about $1000 of additional charges to prep the shower and floor. The floor was not leveled correctly however, which contributed to the issues in his tiling. He stated via text on 7/4 that he would rebuy the tile he damaged, would remove the old tile that was improperly installed by him (twice), and to re-level the floor and hire a tile person to complete that step. Upon discussion this morning, ******************************* told me that he would not be finishing the job despite our earlier conversation (in writing) and refused to level the floor due to his being annoyed that we stated the floor had not been prepped correctly. When I reminded him of our written agreement, and verbal consultation this morning, he told me that it was wrong for me to ask that the work be completed correctly and he feels that I have not overpaid (which I have, itemized below). He did replace the tile and removed the old tile, but has left me without a leveled floor with which to apply new tile, he has left me WITHOUT A TOILET for a week+, and no functional shower.Total Initial Estimate: $5920 Final Invoice Cost with additional charges: $6870 Amount paid as of 7/5: $4170 Services rendered/completed: total $3700 ($1200 demo/waste removal, $1800 tub installation and preparation, tub floor leveling $350 (tacked on cost), $300 Wall Preparation (tacked on cost), $50 additional materials (tacked on cost).I am aware now that contractors should not ask for more than 33% of the estimate prior to start of the job. ******************************* requested 50% and with additional payment he requested for material costs, I have paid 70% of the initial estimate, making it 60% paid. Requesting refund of $470
