Contracted with Garvec ****************** Gardens LLC for landscaping project - they referred me to their preferred electrical contractor Bassett Electrical Contracting to carry out wiring work for a garden waterfall. A contract for the electrical work was sent by Bassett. I never signed the contract with Bassett although informed them that the ******************* had approved the scope of work. I was informed by ****** that Bassett would carry out the work on a Sunday. I assumed this was because of work backlog. The work was completed on 7/16/2023. When I enquired about the amount payable, Bassett informed me that the invoice amount assumed w/e rates and should be paid in full. I never asked for the work to be carried out on a w/e. I paid Bassett $2,000 which reflected standard rates and according to their calculations still returned them a 25% profit. They are adamant that I owe the full $3,000 and are sending it to collections.

      Business response

      07/31/2023

Bassett Electrical was contacted by ******************* to perform electrical work at his residence on **** Applewood Court, ********, ** in April 2023. After *** reviewed the scope of work in April 2023 at his home with **** present, he  was sent a proposal on 4/18/23 (see attached email). From that time up until the completion of the project, **** never asked any questions or expressed any concerns about the proposal of $3,000.00. **** then had the proposal from Garvec and BEC sent to and approved by the ******************* on 4/21/23 (see attached). **** then sent this document to ****** and BEC with the verbal go-ahead to perform the work (via email). **** allowed *** onto his property on 7/16/23 to complete the work. The work was completed correctly and as specified. Upon the receipt of a $2,000.00 check from **** (check  #*** dated 7/20/23), he included an invoice with the $3,000.00 total crossed out and changed it to $2,000.00 (see attached). **** stated (via email) that the reduction in payment was because he had concerns that BEC was charging weekend rates. However, that is not the case.  BEC has successfully completed many similar jobs with Garvec (invoices can be provided if needed). The price of these jobs is always very similar, ranging from $2,500-$3,500, depending on the exact scope of work. Because this specific job happened to be completed on the weekend, it only means that BEC had to pay their employees more for their time (union wages, can provide wage sheets if needed), and had less total profit on the job. The amount of the contract was not completely determined by the fact that the job was performed on a weekend. The remaining balance of $1,000.00 is due on 8/16/2023. If not received, *** will move forward with actions required to obtain the past due.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ******** and will settle the matter with the contractor.

This resolution is not satisfactory to me but I feel I am left with no other option.

The contractor surreptitiously charges weekend rates for work in their proposals. Their work was a low standard - complaints made by the Village Inspector about not seeking the appropriate inspection, wire and other materials left on the lawn (hazard to pets and children), and turf left sitting on top of trench (owner had to repair lawn).

      Sincerely,

      *******************
