I am in the process of gaining admission to a University in North Carolina. In the process the admissions officer stated I needed to gain a transcript from Sullivan University. I applied and was accepted to Sullivan University back in 2008 right after high-school but didn't attend due to moving to Louisiana. I contacted Sullivan University about this and they said I had a balance of over $3000 and they would not release that transcript until it is paid in full. I never got a contact about a bill or collections and it is not on my credit report. I asked for a bill or proof of this debt and was told I would receive it via email. The email is a hand typed message saying what I supposedly owe them and that no bill is available. There isn't even a bill or anything to dispute, I shouldn't have to pay this debt and this could potentially prevent me from continuing my education moving forward. I would like them to remove this debt that there is no proof of and whatever "transcript" they say that I have. This seems like a huge scam.Business response

The student did enroll in 2008 and did complete a quarter of classes. We have sent her ledger with the charges, her report card to her via email and her unofficial transcript was mailed. Per our policy in the catalog, her financial obligation has to be taken care of before we can release an official transcript.Initial Complaint

They stole 2500 from my pell Grant and now want it paid back. Sullivan university needs to stop focusing on how much money they can bilk you for. And start focusing on classes students can actually use. Worthless classes for poor people who don't have money to waist.Business response

Mr. ****** **** enrolled to start classes at Sullivan University in the Fall 2022 term. He enrolled in 12 credits on 9/26/2022 pursing a Cannabusiness Studies Certificate. His tuition for the 12 credits was $4740.00 and he charged $217.28 in books. On 9/30/2022 we received $4740 in an external scholarship for the fall 2022 and $4740 in an external scholarship for the winter 2023 quarter. The student additionally was eligible for $2399 in federal grants for the fall 2022 quarter and $100.00 Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. The student received a stipend of $2081.72 on 10/18/22 and $100.00 on 11/1/22 after his grants posted to his account. During the fall quarter after tuition and book expenses were paid; a credit of $4740 was retained for the winter 2023 quarter as that scholarship was specifically for the Winter 2023 quarter. The student had a $0.00 balance for the Fall 2022 quarter after he received his stipends.
In December 2022 it was determined the student had not completed the fall 2022 quarter and he was administratively dropped. His last day of attendance was determined to be October 13, 2022. The student did contact the office on 12/31/22 and informed the office he had been sent to jail and that was why he was unable to complete the quarter, but since the student didn’t complete the course, our academic department had to determine what his last day of attendance was. Due to this, the external scholarship received for the Winter 2023 quarter had to be returned. Along with the scholarship being returned, an R2T4 (Return to Tile IV funds, which is required for every student who withdraws or is dropped for non-completion) was completed and a refund of $1818.00 was returned in PELL Grant.
Once the R2T4 was completed, the student owed a balance of $1818.00 due to the PELL grant being returned. The federal regulations were followed correctly due to the student not completing the quarter. The student did contact the office on 12/31/22 and informed the office he had been sent to jail and that was why he was unable to complete the quarter.Initial Complaint

I enrolled for spring semester so after week 8 of classes Sullivan University states that I didn’t qualify for State Grants because of proof of Residency however all of these documents was provided before the first day of class however Sullivan University deletes documents provided two weeks before spring semester ends so that they can keep funds provided from Grants that is way prices for each course you take are higher than any other University so after taking all financial aid they delete documents in order to defraud you and loan services out of fundsBusiness response

The transaction happened between January and March of 2023. During this time I was allegedly but on warning status. Which made no since because i had never been put on any status before during this enrollment period. Now my gpa was very low to the point where I should have been placed on probation. I had to withdraw twice during this time due to my daughter having been involved in a bad accident. The university didnt take this into account and instead suspended me instead of trying to work with me. This has cost me thousands of dollars. All because the school had zero compassion for the situation. They requested private medical records in order to appeal which couldnt be turned over because there was an investigation going on into her wreck. That wasnt cleared until april of 2023.Business response

This situation was initially addressed after the student filed an Official Grievance during the Winter 2023 quarter on February 9, 2023, in which he stated what his understanding was of the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy and requested that his Warning Status be removed.
The student was notified that he was incorrect in his understanding of the status progression of SAP, and the process was fully explained to him and the Sullivan catalog was referenced in the explanation. The student was informed that Sullivan University was unable to remove the Warning Status, and should he leave that quarter (which he did), he would be suspended and would need to appeal the suspension.
The student responded that he didn't realize the policy as he thought and meant no harm or attack on anyone. He stated that he talked to Student Services or Academic Services, and they explained it a little clearer. The student stated that when it comes to policies, sometimes it gets a little complex, and that he was going to consider this complaint on his end dropped and resolved.
Since Sullivan has extenuating circumstance policies in place, I encourage the student to file his Suspension Appeal for reentry in the Summer 2023 quarter.

This doesn't address the issue at hand the school will request medically sensitive information that isnt within my means to provide as this information is not mine to distribute. I do intend on filing an appeal or i would request the university allow me access to my transcripts so i can move on to another school.Business response
04/25/2023
The University is aware of the medically sensitive information and will not request that information as documentation. When the student files the Suspension Appeal, a third-party statement or letter accompanying the appeal to verify the information being submitted may be used as the documentation.Customer response

after speaking with the school i find almost everything good except being able to get my transcript and having all of the money removed off of my file as i do not intend on returning to the university as they do not have the program i have decided to go for.
I am rejecting this response because:

I offered to make payments on my debt, and they wouldn’t accept any type of payment from me unless it was their amount that they wanted, therefore.. they denied my money to pay my debt, as if my money was no good in any form to them.Business response

**** ******* had a balance when she stopped attending Sullivan University on 2/1/21. We reached out multiple times via phone, mail and email trying to assist her in setting up a payment plan so she could fulfill her financial obligation. On 6/7/21 she agreed on a payment plan to begin 7/1/21. Ms. ******* failed to make any payments from 2/1/21 thru 9/23/21 to which a final notice was mailed out on 10/15/21 after numerous attempts via phone, email, and letters again. She was informed at that point she would be placed with an outside collection agency. On 10/27/21 she called past the timeframe and now needed to set up a payment plan with the collection agency and was provided their information. The agency's last spoke with her on 12/1/21 and tried to get a payment plan set u, but Ms. ******* would not do so at the time as she was unable to pay anything. As of 12/27/21, she still has paid nothing. The agency is willing to work with her.
