I contacted Graduate Contracting on 3/7/23 regarding roof repair. They said they could install emergency tarps the next day. I asked about the cost and was told not to worry about it. They installed the tarps on 3/8. On 3/24, the insurance adjuster and Graduate's insurance specialist met for the roof inspection. That same day, I received a verbal report from the adjuster and asked Graduate if they could do the job for the adjuster's amount. Graduate's insurance specialist stated he needed to see the report. I hand-delivered the written report to Graduate's receptionist on or about 4/3 where it was photocopied. Having received no response, I called and left a VM message on 4/12. Still no response. I subsequently contracted with another company on 4/22. The repairs were completed on 5/19. I heard nothing from Graduate until receiving a text message on 6/14 stating, "Just wondering when we can expect payment for invoice #2039". I texted back that I had not received any invoice, and Graduate had not done the roof repair. On 6/15 they e-mailed me an invoice for emergency tarping, $350.00, which was dated 5/23. There was never any prior discussion of a tarp fee. Back in March, a different company quoted $150 for an emergency tarp fee, but I chose Graduate because they could install the tarps sooner. Despite being dissatisfied with Graduate's lack of communication, and in the interest of fairness, I offered to pay them $100 for their trouble, even though they never communicated with me after 4/12, except for presenting me with the invoice. Now they are saying they will file a lien against my home if they don't receive $350 plus a late fee by 7/21. I hope BBB can assist in resolving this matter satisfactorily. Thank you for your prompt response.

The attached email was sent to the customer.  We will gladly waive the late fee and agree to settle for $300.00.  That is the amount we paid for labor and material.  That amount does not cover any other company expenses or overhead though. We are a small local company and *** ********* approved for us to do the work.

      Complaint: ********
I am rejecting this response because:

Graduate Contracting never quoted me a price for emergency tarping. Had they followed through with contracting to do roof repairs, as they had suggested they were willing and available to do, it presumably would have been included in the contract, but no such contract was ever drafted despite my attempts to contact them. The lack of communication was frustrating and unprofessional. I subsequently hired another company to do the roof repairs, paying them what the insurance company allowed, plus my deductible. I am willing to settle this matter with Graduate Contracting for $200, double my original offer and more than I was quoted by another company for tarping, noting that this is an extra expense to me for this claim, given that I have already paid.

      Sincerely,

      ******* *********
