Between February 27-March 9 Prestige Acres (Joe Lanum) performed landscape cleanup and built a patio on my property. The patio was to have a 6’ privacy fence adjacent to it. It had significant existing landscape screening. The scope of the landscape cleanup was more than we requested. Joe did offer to replant some trees in the areas that were over removed. We were charged for the trees and accepted that resolution. Joe gave a quote for the 6’ privacy fence (so he was aware of the specifications) but we opted to use our usual contractor. The patio was to be constructed with a wall on top and bottom to make it level (see attach) but instead Joe built it 2’ off the ground with only one wall and fill dirt which resulted in the “privacy fence” being only 4’ above the patio now. It is also 18” away from the fence, a major fall hazard. Joe offered no real explanation for this substantial design change without any onsite discussion. He did ask us for more money because “I built you a better patio than what you asked for.” We declined. He also failed to put in backfill behind the upper blocks. Prestige also removed the lower limbs of a 50’ cryptomeria tree which was the entire screening for the patio area from the neighbor. Joe admitted negligence & said he “should’ve tied those limbs up.” Nothing can be planted beneath this tree due to rocks/roots so it’s a permanent eyesore which offers no screening now. Our usual contractor built a raised bed between the fence and patio so as to plant skinny evergreens to make some sort of screening taller than 6’. A designer assessed the cryptomeria area & there’s nothing that can be done to improve it visually except some pots with plants underneath it & building a screen behind it. I am seeking compensation of $2000 for the additional planter box and trees that must be installed due to major design error to the patio as well as the value of the Cryptomeria, to either remove and replace it or build a screen due to his negligence.
