I recieved a 60 gift certificate to The Local Collective in ************ last year, 2021, either for my birthday in Oct or Christmas in Dec. I went to this store on Dec 9th 2022 to use the gift certificate only to discover it had an expiration date of June 2022! I didn't even check the certificate for an expiration date because I thought that was illegal? I questioned the check out lady who told me that all their gift cards are only good for 6 months due to their vendors and she would not honor the gift certificate. I questioned the legality of this and she didn't really say anything but took the certificate and ripped it up. I am hoping you can confirm that this is illegal. It makes no sense at all to give a business money for a good and then never recieve said good but the business retains the money. This store could make a killing off of people.Business response

We tell the customers who purchase our gift certificates beforehand that they have an expiration of 6months (due to our handmade nature of the shop and what the previous owners did before me) and to relay the message to who they give it to and show them that it is written on them as well. I just followed suit to what Ive known. I didnt know anything was illegal considering there are SOOO many shops that do the same thing. The customer also wanted money back for what wasnt being spent on the certificate (which she only was spending around $25 of $60). They way the customer interacted with me and how upset she got almost instantly and made a scene were red flags to me. We dont refund anyone for unused gift certificates. In 6 years of business we have never had an issue with this. I didnt say much because it was our busiest day of the year and I was taken back by her rudeness and couldnt even find words for this situation. Attached is a picture of our certificates.
