I began working with this business in April od 2020. I contracted them to replace my roof and and existing skylight on said roof. Upon completion of the project, there have been a series of issues related to the roof (details below). These issues have either been inadequately addressed or are being ignored by the business entirely. Below is the timeline of these issues:06/24/21 - The roofing project begins and is finalized 07/06/21.09/13/21 - After the first substantial rainstorm since the completion of the project, the attached garage roof replaced by Wedl Roofing begins leaking excessively, leaving a puddle of standing water on the garage floor. I reach out to ****** immediately to request his company address this issue with their work.09/18/21 - 10/13/21 - Wedl roofing initially caulks the leaking are of the roof. It does not fix the issue. Wedl roofing then applies new flashing to a joint in the roof, which seems to fix the issue. Upon completion of this the owner states that he will cover the work related to the leak for five years, indicating it won't last the 15 to 20 year lifetime previously quoted.12/17/21 - Moisture issues around the skylight installed by Wedl Roofing lead to a discovery that the skylight is mounted incorrectly, Observations include - water seeping into the interior of the house through a gap in the window seal, mold on the window and curb (which did not have a thermal barrier installed as per code), and ample condensate on the interior of the window and curb.12/21/21 - **** reseats the skylight and looks at the mold present from the improper installation. **** claims the mold in the attic "was already there before" and leaves a bottle of mold control spray, stating the issues with the curb insulation and mold are issues I will have to address on my own.12/23/21 to present - Wedl roofing no longer response to messages. A new leak on the porch roof was discovered in January and reported to the business. I received no response.

The leak in the garage was absolutely my fault I apologize greatly for this but once we had installed the new flashing it will never be an issue again. However as for as the promises I had made and broken, those had been made and would have been honored if this was something I had done wrong. Once I had found the skylight was properly installed and there was no leaking and no damage in the attic this is now a condensation issue and not a roof problem. I am sorry I was unable to make you happy and do wish you the best.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

Wedl Roofing's claims about the issue being a condensation issue are false. The room has been sitting, closed off and unused since the improper installation of the skylight was discovered in December. Moisture issues continue regardless. While Wedl Roofing did reseat the skylight that was improperly installed, according to a licensed inspector the curb height is incorrect (must be taller than 4", this install is less than 4" tall) and the required thermal barrier was not installed. When contracting with Wedl Roofing I requested the existing skylight window to be replaced. I did not request for a curb mount and different size window to be installed. All of these interior moisture issues are precisely because of the improper installation of a curb and skylight.

Additionally, there are now issues with water seeping through the front porch roof (pictures provided previously). Neither the moisture issues or the water seepage issues existed prior to Wedl Roofing's replacement of the roof. Wedl Roofing was informed of these issues and ignored the messages. Apologizing doesn't complete the repairs needed to correct these issues.

Hello - Please see attached. This report details the variety of issues with the installation. Upon reviewing the document again, I noticed it did not mention the thermal barrier issue. The inspector stated he previously mentioned a thermal barrier as a potential solution to managing the issues caused by the Wedl Roofing install, but clarified the thermal barrier is not required (this was my misunderstanding). That stated, the variety of issues with the install are detailed in the attachment, and the included install instructions address the curb height issue.

      Thanks,

      Hello,

The inspection happened after Wedl Roofing replaced the roof and skylight. **** stated he would send an inspector to review his work after reseating the leaking/improperly installed skylight, but when I notified him the moisture issues continued after his second attempt he stop responding to messages. I requested multiple times that he send the promised inspector, but those messages also received no response.

None of the issues with the roof or skylight, including the moisture issues, existed until Wedl Roofing completed their work. When **** ignored messages to send the inspector they promised to send I reached out to an inspector myself. I was hoping the inspector could review the exterior work as well, but weather conditions did not permit that to occur. The previously attached report is the inspector's summary of the work completed by Wedl Roofing.

      Thanks,

      Caleb

      Hello,

Do you have any recommendations regarding who to contact? Prior to reporting this issue to BBB, I reached out to the local building inspector's office and explained the situation. They advised me they did not inspect such issues, and they didn't have any recommendations for specialist inspectors; however, the stated a review by an independent housing inspector should suffice for the purposes of filing a complaint and pursuing recourse for these issues. That's what I did, and now you are telling me to get yet another inspector to review Wedl Roofing's work. I'm not sure how to determine if an inspector is specialized in roofing and/or skylight windows; nor do I want to keep paying for inspectors to keep reviewing the same issues (which were not present prior to the work completed by Wedl Roofing). It seems like this is beginning to lean toward defaulting in favor of the contractor despite the fact I've supplied ample evidence/a professional review of the work and Wedl Roofing has provided no evidence to support their claims. There weren't issues with the skylight prior to Wedl Roofing tearing out the existing window, adding a curb where there wasn't one before, and improperly installing the new skylight. The house was inspected in February 2021, and there were no documented issues related to the old skylight (the one removed by Wedl Roofing in the summer of 2021). There are now issues following Wedl Roofing's work, as evidenced by the photos and inspection report I already provided.

      Thanks,

      Caleb

In regards to the complaint my company has received after discussing this situation with three licensed contractors, the owner of a window company, the owner of an HVAC company, and the owner of another roofing company all agreed rather strongly that my job is to keep all moisture out of a home.  In regards to the special skylight that *** supply, Menards, Zuerns and all these professionals have never seen or heard of, I apologize I didnt make this skylight for this home. I am sorry I was not able to stop the condensation problem, but my job is to keep the rain and snow outside of the home and that skylight was installed perfectly. I am not happy about having someone not pleased with my company but at this point I feel I have done my job and wish everyone the best.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

A licensed inspector has provided a detailed report that contradicts ****** claims that the skylight was "installed perfectly." That report was provided previously. Photo evidence of the issues caused by ****** installation also contradict said claim.

****** apologies will not fix the issues he caused, and at this point it is clear his business has zero intention of rectifying the issues caused by their roofing work. As such, at this time I have had to take alterntiave actions to repair the damage caused by his improper installation.

Given the evidence supplied (photos, inspection report, etc) I would like the BBB to take action to reflect this quality/workmansship issue in the BBB profile for Wedl Roofing. I do not know what that entails, but I would imagine the BBB does not want to continue to provide an A-rating to a business that operates in the manner laid out in this series of events. Businesses who fail to complete quality work and fail to conduct themselves in a professional and accountable manner should be known to the public.
