I ordered the Josephine Dining Table and it arrived looking dinged up, and the finish was not the pretty finish in the pictures on the website. It looks dusty like it needs to be wiped off. They said this is all normal "distressing" and wouldn't take the table back. They said they'd send me $150.00 and a touch up kit! Buyer beware.James + James Furniture Response

Thank you for your feedback, and we're truly sorry to hear that the table didn’t meet your expectations. We understand that the natural variations and distressing in the finish can sometimes differ from what is seen in online photos, especially since we handcraft each piece. The Josephine table, like all of our pieces, is built by hand, so there will always be unique details that give it character. While we do our best to represent our finishes and textures online, it’s important to note that each table is one-of-a-kind and may have slight textural and color differences. That’s why we offer finish samples prior to purchase and stand behind our Cosmetic Standards, which describe the handcrafted details we embrace. We were glad to reach a solution together that you had agreed to. While we typically don’t offer compensation for issues that fall within our established standards, we’re always here to assist in any way we can. Please feel free to reach out to care@carpenterjames.com if there’s anything else we can do to enhance your experience.Review from Laura S

Beware, this company lies and will leave you to deal with a broken table. My designer sent me this company to review their table to which I agreed to purchase a table as a family heirloom (her idea). A table I thought that could last and stand the test of time...To my surprise when I see the table - it is BROKEN! James & James had a professional come out to our home to fix their product. When the professional saw the damage he said “Stick with returning it, it’s not right, it’s definitely not right and there isn’t anything I can do to keep this from shifting. He said he would let his company know that the product cannot be fixed. We called the company to let them know of this information (that the table is damaged and cannot be fixed) and said we want to return it and be refunded to which they denied. They later told our credit card company that we DENIED having the table fixed - this is a LIE - the hired professional said the table is not right. Also to mention there is a big scratch on the table top but I just want a table that isn't broken.Review from Kristen P

Ordered 4 chairs. Was gaslighted upon delivery into believing that any imperfections were due to being handmaiden and advised that to take up any quality issues with the company directly. Company reports that the items were damaged and because the delivery company made no attempt to notate concerns, the chairs will not be replaced. Instead a kit will be sent so we can hire someone to address the work. 2 of 4 chairs delivered flawed and 1 chair delivered with a nail hanging out. Misc areas unsanded and heavily unevenly stained. The design attracted us to the chairs, but for the price point and communication with customer support, I cannot recommend online purchases with this brand to fellow designers or consumers. Please view the items in person before purchasing and avoid delivery. Sentiment in this report mimics our current experience and is simply unfortunate for all parties involved.Review from Meredith M

This company has the appearance of a “homegrown American” company and they are not. The language on their website says their furniture is “assembled in America”. Not made in America. We ordered chairs from them and they came with instructions that say “printed in Vietnam”. We also ordered a table and bench from them. One of the table legs (4 inches wide) has a split knot halfway through it - that is very sharp and splintered. When I brought this to their attention, the response from James + James is this is a “feature”. While it may have been a feature of the wood, why this piece was chosen for the leg is unclear (as it presents a structural risk and also hazard for anyone who touches this area). The bench has a similar gap in the end that was splintered and sharp (and is in a place where people’s hands can easily get caught). The response I received from them on these issues was that they could give me advice for patching these areas myself if I didn’t like them. Had I not paid over $5,000 for the table and bench, I may have accepted that as an answer. It’s also even more unclear why they left these “features” in the wood untouched, because the top of the table has several knots that they bothered to fill in with resin (albeit a cloudy, yellowed resin that looks very cheap for the price point). Finally, not a single table leg is plumb on our table - and it is noticeable from looking at it. James + James did offer to have the delivery company come out and fix this, but they installed them incorrectly the first time, so I’m not sure how that would help. The pockets that hold the table legs also have major gaps between the leg and the pocket, so it takes multiple shims to hold the table leg in place so it stays plumb. This company was awful to work with and their products are a bait and switch from what they show on their website. They hide behind an internet facade, and do not care about the products that end up in your home.Review from Charlotte A

I feel duped by this company. I paid $3000 for a queen size bed which is too large for my queen size mattress. And within one day of ordering, I had second thoughts on the color but they said it was already in production so I couldn’t change; yet it took months to receive. I see beds on fb marketplace that are less than $500 that I should have ordered. Lesson learned.Review from Denise O

I also purchased the Olivia table. My legs also came in gray not matching The harvest wheat top. I too was taken in by their website, no discoloration there. I also had one leg that was shorter than the others which made the table rock! I asked if they would send 4 more legs in the correct color and possible that would also fix the short leg too! I in turn would send those legs back via prepaid postage. They said sometimes the legs turn out gray and our legs could be as much as an inch off….chance you take. After waiting 14 weeks and spending over 3 thousand, I expected some cooperation. They have you money and that was it!Review from Bronwen E

While they might have nice furniture and I say might since I won’t be receiving my table for months, their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. We recently moved across country due to illness and needing to be close to a treatment center. We were unable to fit our oversized custom table in our new home and so we decided to order a smaller table from James & James. We ordered the table and received a receipt however 3 days later we received an email alerting us that our table is “now in production” and would be ready in 12 weeks. I reached out to see if I could cancel the order because we were without a table and our kids are coming for Christmas. The response was an emphatic no! Apparently I had 24 hours to cancel. They also said it clearly states this on their website??? I still can’t find it and if that’s the case why isn’t it up front and center? Perhaps because people might cancel their order as they might not be able to wait 3 months to eat? I find it hard to imagine that my table takes 12 weeks to finish once it enters production. I reached out to a friend who is a finishing carpenter and he said it’s. I’m definitely not happy and feel this company is unethical!Review from Sharon S

I had 2 of 3 shipments arrive damaged from this company. There pieces were packed poorly and supposed to have been signed for upon delivery. I wished I would have read the BBB reviews prior to working with this company. Very disappointing experience and I would not recommend doing business with this company.Review from Ed M

As others here state, the finish on the legs is not as high as the table top. Ordered a Tressel style dining table in Harvest Wheat with matching bench. The tops are close to the earth tone color but the legs are a lighter tone with hints of grey. In addition, the legs are much rougher and lack the same amount of lacquer as the top. This lack of quality results in exposed knots on the legs and crossbars that are not filled with resin and will eventually crumble away. Also, the crossbar for the bench has a crack that runs along the grain. Can see right through. Again, no epoxy resin was applied to address this. Unfortunately I now have to apply resin in these problem areas and give all legs a sanding with probably 2-3 coats of lacquer. One last thing worth mentioning (because James+James will not) they use oil based polyurethane which absolutely stinks. Expect to air this out in your garage for at least a week prior to assembly. Given these issues, I definitely do not recommend.Review from Erica L

Stay away! When you do purchase and then have an issue simply stop payment on your credit card and dispute. It took many emails and follow up between my credit card company and James+James but in the end I was fully refunded over $4000 purchase price of a damaged table. Which in the end was the same cost to have the table by a local business of my choice. Again, avoid at all cost and STAY AWAY!
