The consumer had been communicating with "Austin White" via email. She was sent a document to complete to receive her loan that included the state seal of Florida, the BBB seal and the logo for Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The document is poorly written and indicates that the BBB has regulation over the company to include monitoring of the "lender" phone calls and the BBB has the right to increase or decrease the loan amount.
On April 25th your BBB took screen shots of the website. All indications point to the website consisting of a cut and paste site from a legitimate company - Lending Club, located in the San Francisco area. (Note: Lending Club has an alert on their BBB profile warning consumers that their name is being fraudulently used in an online loan scam but they stop short of naming the scam company.)
On April 25th your BBB placed calls to two numbers
for this company, one from their website and the other from a loan document sent to the consumer. The number 850-725-7080 from the paperwork resulted in a fast busy signal, however the number from the website 850-430-9000 was answered by a person with a strong accent and difficult to understand. Our associate explained that she wanted to apply for a loan and was trying t get to their website. The person said he didn't know of an issue with the website and would have IT check into it. When she inquired about the Fort Walton Beach address he indicated that they didn't have an office there but did have a physical location in Fort Myers (BBB couldn't verify the existence of this address). As our associate was asking more questions the person on the other end was trying to talk her into completing a form for a loan. She finally completed the call saying she would wait for their website to be available again.
In this situation it seems that no upfront money was trying to be obtained, however the document consumers are required to sign indicates that the monies would be electronically deposited into their bank accounts which means the consumer would need to provide their banking and routing numbers.
BBB encourages anyone wishing to borrow money to seek out a local, legitimate loan provider such as a bank or credit union in their community. If you must use an online provider, please do your homework, ask questions, verify the company's legitimacy with the BBB.
