My husband took our dog, *****, for a haircut at Barker’s Paradise Pet Salon in Chatham, IL on July 9, 2024 He paid $88.55 which included a tip.
For the next few days ***** was very lethargic. When she tried to pee/poop would let out a huge yelp and took off running. There were several areas that were bare/reddened. The haircut was definitely cut unevenly. Here backside had a bloodied area below the rectum. She could not get in a comfortable sitting position. By Friday I was very concerned.
I called Barker’s Paradise on Friday, July 12 at 3:37 pm (call lasted 39 seconds) There was no answer so I left a message my dog had been lethargic all week and asking if they perhaps give the dogs a pill or something to calm them before the haircut. There was no return call.
I called ******* ****** *** in Chatham (*****’s doctor) to try and make an appointment. I made an appointment for the following Monday because they were booked for the day. I couldn’t wait so I went to the ****** ********* ****** in Springfield.
I told the vet my dogs symptons. The plan was for a physical exam and blood work to rule out any other issues that may be making her lethargic. I asked her if the painful elimination could be from something she ate or blocking her bowels. She did not think so. At the time she did not think it was from the grooming either. She stated it could be her anal gland. They took her back for the exam and labs.
She came back in and stated that her anal gland was fine. Her labwork was fine. She then stated the vulvar/vaginal area had been cut and it appeared the clippers got too hot because she had burns as well.”
***** went home with a cone so she wouldn’t be able to reach/lick and irritate the area. She was to wear it for at least a week. She also went home with antibiotics, anti inflammatories and pain pills. My biIl was $588.47.
On Saturday morning I called the Pet Salon at 9:23. (Call lasted 4 minutes). ******* answered the phone. She stated she was he one who cut *****s’s hair but “she was fine when she left the salon”. I told her *****’s symptoms and the findings from the Emergency Clinic. She did not believe me. I told her I was not making anything up or scamming her. She asked for the name of the clinic and I gave her the name, address and phone. I told her that it was fine to check this out.
I did not have my phone with me and I missed 2 return calls from *******. (9:37 and 10:49) At 10:50 she left a 24 second voice mail saying “ She had talked to the doctor at the clinic and she wanted me to return her call.
I called her back at 11:56 (call lasted 5 minutes). She told me ******* at the clinic told her that *****’s anal gland was full and irritated and that they were looking for internal bleeding. I told her no and no. I told her that doctor told me “I don’t want to throw your groomer under the bus but her vulvar/vaginal was cut and burned.“ She again told me that she was the one grooming ***** and that she was fine when she left. I again told her what symptoms ***** had since the haircut. She said “it’s not my fault”. I started crying and said, ”Ma’am you cut my dog”. She started ranting and raving and I don’t remember exactly what she said but I again cried/stated “Ma’am you cut my dog”. She then hung up on me.
I called the ****** ********* ****** and asked for *******. I asked if she told ******* that *****’s anal gland was full and irritated and that they were checking for internal bleeding. ******* replied that is not what they told her. I asked ******* why they would give any information about my dog to a stranger. She stated ******* told her she was going to have to pay for the clinic visit so they told her. I told ******* to put a note in the computer to not give anyone information about my dog except me. (I know there are HIPPA rules for humans, not sure about animals). She replied she would. She told me that ******* and I would have to settle this ourselves. I told her we would. I told her the clinic gave ***** excellent care, I liked the doctor, and I hoped I would never have to use the clinic again. But if another emergency came up I would definitely have no problem bringing ***** in.
No further contact was made with ******* for almost a month. I called about once a week to the Emergency Clinic to see if I could get a copy of the doctor’s report of the visit. Each time they stated the doctor had not dictated and no report was available.
On Monday, August 5th I stopped by the Emergency Clinic again because ***** was limping and not being herself. While I was there I checked and again was told the visit report was not available. Frustrated because I was getting no where I decided to contact ******* and sent a text at 3:03. (see attached). I’m retired and on a fixed income for this amount of money was a challenge.
She responded saying “Mam, I have been extremely nice and patient with you, you were very disrespectful on the last phone call I made to you. I have spoken with the tech numerous times and she has said it was not my fault. Nor was there any cuts on your dog made by me. I again just got off the phone with them and they put in a request again for the doctor to call me. I unfortunately will not refund the cost of grooming. If you decide to show up at my shop I unfortunately have no other option but to have the police present and have you served with a no trespassing order. Anything further you can speak with my attorney ****** ********. Thank you, Barker’s Paradise LLC”
I asked the receptionist if ******* had just called. She stated yes. She told ******* the diagnosis of perivulular biothermia.. I asked if there was a note in the computer to not give ******* any information about my dog. She looked and said, Yes, I didn’t see that.
My only response to ******* was “I am currently at the clinic. They confirmed they did not tell you that. She is not a doctor. What is Mr. ********** number please. I will have my attorney call him”
There has been no further communication with *******. I have never been in the clinic or the clinic parking lot and will never go there. With police threats I fear retaliation from ******* or friends. I attempted to find her attorney’s number and that name didn’t exist online (misspelled?).
The only thing I did do is look at her ******** page to find any of her acquaintance that I may know. I was hoping they would convince her refund my money before I moved forward with reports. (***** ****** (my friend), ***** ******* ****** (my cousin), ********* ****** (my cousin), ******* *********** (past church friend) and ***** ** ****. (neighbor and DAR acquaintance). They all knew her or knew someone who knew her but did not want to get involved.
I only spoke to her on July 13. I only sent one text on August 5. I am not harassing her!
On August 11 I sent emails/messages to the Emergency Clinic’s Board of Directors. No response yet. On August 12 I called the Emergency Clinic and was again told no report was available. On August 12 I also called ******** Veterinary Clinic to speak with Dr. *****. He was out of the office today but the receptionist left him a message. She told me to call ******* ****** to see if they have more pull to get the report. When I called ******* ****** they had documentation. That is why I was confused the Emergency Clinic said had told me minutes earlier there was no report.
