In June 2022, BBB learned that Automotive Old School Retail Parts was using the address from WV Auto Sales on their website. BBB received word from several consumers alleging payments ranging from $400 - $550 were accepted through Zelle, with no products received. Some consumers stated they were asked for additional “refundable” insurance payments for $200. After the products were not received, attempts to call the company or contact them through Facebook went unanswered.
The owner of WV Auto Sales called BBB and stated they had been receiving calls from consumers regarding the use of their business address since 2021. Automotive Old School Retail Parts uses a Facebook page and website to sell parts for old vehicles. The Facebook page shows the moderator is in Cameroon. BBB confirmed the website is no longer operational.
Other names that have been used have been Auto & Powersports, Old School Car Parts and Automated Garage.
BBB offers the following tips when purchasing items online:
- Review the website. Some of the best deals are only available online, but be careful. Check for an About page and a Contact Us section. BBB recommends ensuring the phone numbers and email addresses are both legitimate and responsive. If the site is missing contact information or has typo's, these are red flags.
- Beware of too-good-to-be-true deals. Offers on websites and in unsolicited emails may offer free or very low prices on hard-to-find items, but you may end up with shoddy workmanship or no product at all.
- Shop with a credit card. In case of a fraudulent transaction, a credit card provides additional protections; it’s easier to dispute charges that you didn’t approve or to get your money back if there is a problem. Debit cards, prepaid cards or gift cards don’t have the same protections as a credit card.
- Be careful with your personal information. Be sure you trust a website or company before you divulge your personal information. Once your information is in the hands of a scammer, you won’t be able to get it back.
- Report such instances. If you think you have been the victim of an online purchase scam, you should report it to law enforcement, BBB.org/Scamtracker, Federal Trade Commission and/or your State Attorney General’s office.
